Do you have a tiny closet? Are you looking for how to maximize storage in a small closet? Wish you knew how to maximize your closet space?
Our current home does not have a lot of closet space so it was important to figure out how to increase storage space for our clothes. Here are some of the best storage ideas I have come across of which most of them are inexpensive. Some of these I currently use in my home.
Remove Closet Doors
An easy way to increase your closet space is to remove your closet doors. Since our bedroom furniture takes up most of our bedroom space, we ended up removing the closet doors so that we could access the entire closet. If you have an organized closet, you can just leave the doors off. Because our bedroom closet doesn’t always fall under the organized category so we use a curtain to hide our closet.
It is such a simple DIY project to add a curtain. I went and purchased a tension rod (like you would use for your shower curtain) and a set of curtains. Then, simply hang the curtains on the rod and tighten the rod in your closet opening. Voila! You’re finished. As a bonus, it’s also a great way to add personality and color to your room.
Using Your Closet Doors
If you have a closet door that opens and has space, utilize your doors. Another inexpensive way to add storage is to use over the door organizers. These organizers are a great use of space if you want to store shoes, scarves, or small miscellaneous items,. Here are a couple of different options that I found on Amazon. Delta Children 4 Pocket Over The Door Hanging Organizer and MISSLO Over The Door Shoe Organizer 24 Large Mesh Pockets.
Closet Shelf
I know this may seem like a given in a closet, but not every closet has a shelf over the hanging rod. Obviously this is a must to add storage to your small closet.
Wire Stacking Shelves
You can add wire stacking shelves to your closet for even more storage to your closet. Another quick and easy way to maximize your closet space. We use these shelves in our closet.
Increase Storage with Fabric Storage Bins
I love fabric storage bins! I use a variety of storage bins in my home and you can probably find a storage bin in every room in my home. Because we use shelves in our closet (see above point), storage bins are a great way to add storage space for smaller items or just for a cleaner look. Storage cubes come in a variety of sizes and designs so you can find the perfect ones for you!
Here are a couple of my favorites on Amazon – TheWarmHome Storage Basket with Rope Handles or StorageWorks Closet Storage Bins.
Furthermore, if you are looking for a way to fold your clothes to fit in a storage bin or if you want to have them look like they were professionally folded, check out my other posts – Organize Your Clothes and How to Make A Clothes Folder.
Double Hanging Space
Are you short on hanging space in your closet? Try this double closet rod is another inexpensive way to add additional storage space in your closet. It’s perfect if you hang a lot of shirts or shorter items.
Miscellaneous Tips
Create your own scarf hanger using a wooden hanger and shower curtain rings. I love this idea from From the Desk

If you have space, try adding a small dresser to your closet. Adding a dresser will allow extra storage space for folded clothes such as sweaters, etc.
If you don’t have a large enough space for a dresser, use expandable or stackable shoe shelves like this one on Amazon. When you use shelves like these, it will allow you to make use of the lower space of your closet.
Use Every Available Inch to Maximize Storage in a Small Closet
Finally, the biggest key to maximizing your small closet space is to use every inch of your closet. From the top of your closet all the way down to the floor, there are many ways you can add closet storage.
If you have any additional ideas on how to maximize storage in a small closet, I would love to hear them below.
Hi Julie,
Great suggestions! We moved into a two story home and these old houses don’t have closets. What did people do in the 50’s and 60’s? Anyways, I never heard of a double closet rod! I’ll have to investigate! I am using two shoe organizers and that seems to work for clothes, shoes and other things! I’ll follow you on Pinterest! Love your tips!
Thanks! It is weird to think of not having a closet. Let me know if you end up trying the double closet rod and how it works for you.
I love these tips… I think that I might consider building a closet space with a curtain in the future.
Using a curtain definitely saved us room and allowed us to add color. My favorite part was that it was such an inexpensive fix!
